I just finished a class on implicit bias for a healthcare facility near Detroit. It was a great day working with a receptive and engaged group. Shortly after that, I received a very gracious email that kindly asked if we could make accommodations for their low vision needs, and the needs of others like them who may enjoy the blog. This individual offered several links to programs that can create free audio programs for those who have visual challenges or are blind.
This email really made me take pause. I had not even thought about the blog post needing to go audio to include everyone, and I was pained that I hadn’t. I unintentionally tripped over my own implicit biases as a fully visual person.
As a result of this awakening, starting in January (it’s as fast as I can go!) I will offer a blog and newsletter reading monthly on my YouTube channel. There at least, low vision folks can hear the information. I am also checking in with my website host to see if we can offer large print or audio on the website itself. I cannot thank this correspondent enough! Unfortunately, when I tried to thank them, I kept getting bounce back of my responding email. Perhaps they will catch this blog post and know I am working on it!
The wheel of the year is turning to the time of gratitude, and I am so grateful for this disclosure and grateful to be able to provide ways that people with visual challenges can engage.
In celebration of this gratitude, I am offering a holiday gift to those who engage with us and those who have engaged with us since our beginning a year ago. I am sharing a Gratitude Gathering for those who are interested in creating a gratitude practice. The Gratitude Gathering will offer practical methods of working with gratitude and how the experience can increase wellbeing. A gratitude practice can also change the focus of one’s life and bring back the wonder and awe of life on this planet. It is scheduled for November 27, with time to be determined soon.
